Maybe you’ve never heard of an “Elevator pitch” or you are wondering what an elevator pitch is.
Well, here is the down and dirty!
An Elevator pitch is like a sales pitch where you are selling yourself for what? A job!
It is a concise way of selling yourself as the ideal person for a job.
The idea is that it needs to be concise enough to share with a stranger on an elevator before the doors open and they exit forever.
Where do most people go wrong when creating an Elevator pitch?
People think of it as a job title and a description so they may say:
“Hey! Nice to meet you. My name is Laura and I am an operations manager for Aloha Films.
I create sales reports, I hire and train new staff and I make sure the day-to-day operations of Aloha Films are functioning well”.
Too boring!
This is likely what you do everyday but nobody will remember that because it is the same type of Elevator pitch that most people have.
So here’s how I teach my clients to create one.
Think of your Elevator pitch as the value that you bring to a role through your job title.
So “Operations Manager” is your title, but what value do you bring to the role of Ops Manager?
In other words, why do people come to you? Why do people love you?
Maybe it’s because you are gifted at process improvement or maybe you are this savant at turning around underperformining teams.
That is valuable to leaders!
So if I were you, here’s what my Elevator pitch would be like:
“Hey! Nice to meet you. My name is Laura. I’m an Ops Manager at Aloha Films.
In addition to managing day-to-day operational functions I’m known as the go-to person for process improvement and turning around underperforming teams.”
What leader wouldn’t want to talk to someone who brings this type of value to a role or a department or even to the company as a whole?
Here’s another example. I’m a Career Coach, right?
My elevator pitch would look like this:
“Hey! I’m Laura. I’m a Career Success Coach. I help job seekers to navigate bias locked inside of the hiring process. That’s the number one reason clients come my way”.
So I am not boasting, I am not being arrogant. I am simply sharing my value with an employer or, in this case, with you, my clients.
